경신원은 지속가능한 주택 및 도시 (재)개발분야 전문가로, 사회적 약자들에게 주택, 환경, 교육, 경제적인 면에서 보다 효율적이고 지속가능한 개선방안을 마련하기 위해 노력하고 있다.
그녀는 지난 15년동안 영국과 미국에서 주택 및 도시 (재)개발 분야의 교육자와 연구자로 활동하였다. 1990년대 중반부터 한국의 주택산업연구원에서 연구원으로 근무를 하다가 2000년대 초반, 영국의 버밍엄으로 박사학위를 위해 떠났다. 2006년 영국 버밍엄대학교 도시 및 지역계획학과에서 “‘Community involvement’: Is it the answer? Perspectives on housing renewal in Britain and Korea” 논문으로 박사학위 취득 이후 동대학에서 조교수로 근무하였다 (2006-2009).
이후 미국으로 이주하여 워싱턴 DC에 위치한 Urban Institute에서 Visiting Fellow 겸 Consultant로 재직하였다 (2010-2014). 2014년 MIT의 SPURS Fellow로 선발되어 보스턴의 캠브리지에서 연구자로 활동 (2014-2016)하는 동시에, 2016년 도시계획분야의 Master of Science 학위를 취득하였다. 또한 2014년부터 MIT의 RCHI의 연구팀원으로 현재까지 일하고 있다. 2016년 서울로 돌아와 서울대학교 환경대학원에서 도시계획분야에 대한 강의를 하였다(2016-2018). 현재는 서울시립대학교 국제도시과학대학원에서 국제도시 및 지역개발과 관련한 강의를 하고 있다(2020-현재).
2018년, 오랫동안 꿈꾸어 온 연구법인 '도시와 커뮤니티 연구소'를 시작하였다. 주택 및 도시 (재)개발 분야에서의 국내외적 경험을 바탕으로 '도시와 커뮤니티 연구소'를 통해 보다 나은 사회를 만들기 위한 창의적인 실천방안을 모색하고 있다.
Dr. Shinwon Kyung is a specialist in sustainable urban (re)development policies and practices and where necessary, explore alternative models to achieve effective and sustainable improvements to the housing, environment, education, social and economic opportunities of disadvantaged people.
Over the last 15 years, she has gained extensive international work experience. Having spent her early working years as an Associate Research Fellow at the Korea Housing Institute in Seoul, in 2002, she moved to the UK in order to complete a PhD in Urban and Regional Studies at the University of Birmingham (2002-2006). Her PhD thesis, 'Community involvement, is it the answer? Perspectives on housing renewal in Britain and Korea', was funded through a British Chevening Scholarship and Barbara M.D. Smith Scholarship in Britain. She subsequently worked there as an Assistant Professor (2006-2009). Then she joined the Urban Institute in Washington DC, US as a Visiting Fellow/Consultant (2010-2014). In 2014, she was selected as a Special Program for Urban and Regional Studies (SPURS) Fellow at MIT. Since then, she has been a member of the Resilient Cities Housing Initiative (RCHI), Center for Advanced Urbanism at MIT (2014-present). In addition, she accomplished a Master of Science (SM) degree for professionals with distinguished practice at the Department of Urban Studies and Planning (DUSP), MIT (2015-2016). On returning to Korea, she taught post-graduate level courses in Graduate School of Environmental Studies at Seoul National University (2016-2018). Now she is a lecturing in International School of Urban Science at University of Seoul for international students.
In 2018, she founded the Urban & Community Research Center, a research-based social enterprise, in Korea.
